What to put in a one-page summary, which KPIs to track and how to keep the pack consistent month after month.
CA Hritik Dang · 5 min read
A management pack is the monthly report that tells owners and boards how the business is doing. Many packs are long and rarely read. A useful one is short, consistent and arrives on time.
Page one: the summary
- Revenue, gross margin and operating profit, against budget and last year.
- Cash balance and the forecast low point over the coming weeks.
- Three to five sentences on what drove the month.
- Decisions or approvals needed.
Choose KPIs that match the business
Pick the handful of measures that actually drive results and keep them the same every month. A subscription business might track recurring revenue, churn and customer acquisition cost. A product business might track units sold, average selling price, inventory days and gross margin by channel. A services firm might track utilisation and project margins.
Supporting pages
- Profit and loss against budget with variance commentary.
- Balance sheet and working capital: receivables, payables and inventory.
- Cash flow and the rolling forecast.
- KPI dashboard with trends over at least twelve months.
A pack that arrives on the same day every month gets read. One that arrives whenever it is ready does not.
Make it routine
Agree the close calendar, the format and the delivery date, and stick to them. Over time the pack becomes the reference point for every finance conversation, with the bank, with investors and inside the team.
